April 18 – World Amateur Radio Day

From the ARRL
World Amateur Radio Day (WARD) is held on April 18 every year and is celebrated by radio amateurs and their national associations which are organized as member-societies of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). It was on this day in 1925 that the IARU was formed in Paris. American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Co-Founder Hiram Percy Maxim was its first president.

The IARU announced that Human Security for All (HS4A) will be this year’s World Amateur Radio Day theme. The day is being celebrated with a 2-week operating event occurring April 11 – 25. Special event stations will be operating from around the world, making two-way radio contacts to call attention to the HS4A campaign. The United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security describes ‘human security’ as “a more powerful, lasting approach to the most difficult deficits in peace and development,” such as poverty, war, and natural disasters.

ARRL encourages all radio amateurs to take to the airwaves for WARD, to enjoy our global friendship with other amateurs, and to show our skills and capabilities to the public.

More information about 2023 World Amateur Radio Day is available at www.arrl.org/world-amateur-radio-day and www.iaru.org/on-the-air/world-amateur-radio-day

Spring 2023 SET / Red Cross Winlink Exercise

On April 1 the EPA and WPA participated in statewide Winlink exercise in cooperation with the American Red Cross. The drill, coordinated by Red Cross DCS Jay King, W2AFE and his team, was a resounding success with more than 112 operators sending 350 messages to various Red Cross chapters in Pennsylvania. The exercise was conducted exclusively via digital protocols using Winlink.

Of the 112 participants, 96 were ARES members, 28 were Red Cross members, 36 used emergency power, 17 operated mobile and 94 were able to deploy with a VHF station. Winlink messages were sent using a variety of digital protocols including VARA FM, VARA HF, PACKET, ARDOP, PACTOR and TELNET.

The exercise was designed to test the response and deployment availability of ARES units and members in a widespread emergency in which the American Red Cross needed to send a variety of formatted messages throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

April 7 – Monthly Meeting: FLAMP & FLDIGI with N2ADD

Area hams are welcome to join us for our Friday, April 7th monthly meeting at 7:00 pm at St. James Lutheran Church, 93 Kugler Rd. in Limerick, PA. Refreshments will be served.

The April meeting is a follow up by Nate Rosenthal, N2ADD to the Fldigi presentation he gave in February. In this presentation he will demonstrate two companion programs to Fldigi: Flamp and Flmsg.

Flamp is a program for file transfer. Flmsg is used to compose and format messages. Both of these operate in conjunction with Fldigi and are not one-to-one. They are free and can be downloaded from the same site as Fldigi.

This will also be participatory. Please download and install both Flamp and Flmsg before the meeting. Bring the same items you brought to the February meeting:

 – a laptop computer and an HT.
– a speaker-mic for your H Tif you have it

To download the program before the meeting, go to http://www.w1hkj.com/files/. Then click on fldigi. The file to download is fldigi-4.1.23_setup.exe for Windowsfldigi-4.1.23.tar.gz for Linux. You will have to unpack and compile the Linux version for your system.

Note: July and August meetings will be on Zoom and not at the church.
